Are the soles safe over gravel and rough surfaces?
Yes. The outsole is natural rubber, tested for durability across grass, footpaths, gravel and parks. The sole is thin enough for natural foot movement, but tough enough to handle Aussie playgrounds. We've put them through real-world testing with real kids before they ever hit the website.
My child has a high instep, curly toes or wide feet. Will these work?
Yes, in most cases. Rafferty's are designed with a wide toe box, flexible upper, and adjustable Velcro closure, which makes them suitable for kids with high insteps, curly toes, toe crowding and wider feet. If your child has a specific foot condition, we always recommend checking with your podiatrist. Order a pair, take them to your appointment, and if they're not the right fit you can return them for a full refund. Zero risk.
Why are Rafferty's $95?
They're more than a typical pair of kids' shoes. Because they're built differently. Most kids' shoes are designed to look like adult shoes shrunk down: stiff soles, narrow toe boxes, raised heels. Rafferty's are built around how little feet actually develop: wide toe box, zero drop, flexible thin sole, growth markers inside.
We also use better materials (vegan, PFAS-tested, dual-reinforced stitching) and design in Australia with input from foot health professionals. They cost more because they're actually doing more.
My child has never worn barefoot shoes before. Is it OK to switch?
Yes, and most kids adjust within a few days. Barefoot shoes work with your child's natural foot development rather than against it. Younger kids transition fastest because their feet are still forming. If you're unsure, start with shorter wears (2-3 hours a day) for the first week and let them work up from there. Their muscles and tendons are adapting to a more natural way of moving.
The light colours look beautiful but won't they get dirty?
Honestly? Yes, they will. Kids are kids.
Three things help:
- Spray with a fabric protectant before first wear
- The suede upper is water-resistant. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent
- Embrace the mess. A bit of grass and park dirt is the sign of a kid who's actually using their feet, which is the whole point
